Pickering (estimated 2005 population 94,000) is a city located directly to the east of Toronto in Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. The name Pickering is taken from "Pickering Township", the name of the geographic and political area until the establishment of regional government in 1974. At that point, the area (with the exception of what became the Town of Ajax) took the name "Town of Pickering". It became the City of Pickering in 2000. The City of Pickering was recognized as one of Canada’s best cities for growth companies in the June 2006 issue of Profit magazine. The magazine cited several factors that make a city good for business: close proximity to major transportation hubs and post-secondary institutions; a large and thriving population of young, motivated knowledge workers; and easy access to big investors. It made special mention that Pickering is expected to lead the country in population growth over the next several years.
